Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between KB and KiB?
KB (kilobyte) uses decimal: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes. KiB (kibibyte) uses binary: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. Operating systems often mix these, which is why a '1 TB' drive shows as ~931 GB in Windows.
Why does my hard drive show less space than advertised?
Drive manufacturers use decimal (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), but operating systems use binary (1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes). A 1 TB drive is actually about 931 GiB.
Is MB the same as Mb?
No! MB (megabyte) is storage, Mb (megabit) is speed. There are 8 bits in a byte, so 100 Mbps internet = 12.5 MBps maximum download speed.
How many GB in a TB?
Using decimal (most common): 1 TB = 1,000 GB. Using binary: 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB.
